Your Body Is Telling A Story
5 minute read | If you don't like your body, forcing it to change won't help. You have to change the story! Learn how inside.
"Mom! Mom! Did you know red food dye causes cancer?"
My youngest came home the other day with an alarming amount of health "facts." To no surprise, all were fear-based "facts."
I quote facts because her sources were other nine- and ten-year-old children. I don't want to say they can't be trusted, but these are the same sources who made her believe there could be monsters in her room.
After overcoming the internal annoyance that no matter how much I tell my children, I know a thing or two about food and what it does inside the body.
THIS IS MY CAREER! I've spent my life studying the body. Of course, I know those claims.
Sigh.
I talked her through how this could be true but how it misses what is most true. What is most true is how your body is responding and why.
Plus, let's not let red food dye have more power than it deserves.
We've all picked up fear-based stories about health that have embedded themselves in our beliefs, making us fear things we shouldn't fear, causing us to control what doesn't change us while diminishing what does.
It keeps us focused on the wrong story. It keeps you focused on the story the world is telling you while neglecting the only story that matters. The story your body is telling you.
Your body is telling a story.
It feels elementary to say that, but it is.
Your body is a map of your history.
It's narrating your life, recording the events of your past while living as a reflection of the story you tell yourself and the stories others tell about you.
What that story is shifts the outcome of your biology.
It shifts how your body responds, how much fat you hold onto, how you generate energy, and what you find worthy of working on.
No matter how much the world tells you, fat doesn't create your story. It's an outcome of your story.
Just like red food dye doesn't automatically cause cancer because cancer, illness, and disease do not solely happen because of external things. They happen because of the story your body is living out.
What is the story your body is living?
Do you like that story?
If you don't, you must get to know it. Understanding the story is the only way to change it. But that requires you to stop chasing external stories and pay attention to the story of your body.
It's the only one that matters.
That doesn't change the understanding that external things can hurt your body. Red food dye should be part of our discussions. But they don't need to carry the weight they do, and they definitely shouldn't distract you from uncovering the story your body is telling you.
When I was in the thick of my healing journey, questioning everything about what I knew, I faced the blunt reality. I knew a lot about health, even nutrition. I knew about calories and supplements. Yet, none of it seemed to matter.
I lost my health knowing all of the external things because I missed what mattered most.
I missed the story my body was telling me.
My only concern with the body in my previous health career was changing my body. Better said, manipulating it to do what I wanted it to do.
But it doesn't work that way because you can't just cut to the ending without understanding the beginning and making changes through every page in the middle.
It's why we can't make big rash health claims in the external world.
Health is only and always about the body, and the body never gets it wrong.
It is always acting for your good, even if that's survival. It is doing everything possible to keep you alive and well, even if that means fighting against you.
But like all good stories, it's not over until it's over. And as long as you're living, your story is not finished.
The fastest way to change the story is to listen to the story it is currently telling you and then influence that story to create a healthier ending.
What is the story your body is telling you is.
Do you like that story?

"Health Made Simple has completely changed the course of my life. And I sincerely mean that. Before HMS, I was playing small. I was afraid to really put myself out there because I was afraid my pain would hold me back. So, somehow, instead of trying, I just quit before I ever even tried. I didn't even realize how much I didn't believe in myself and my capacity. But now, through HMS, I am seeing myself in a totally different way ."
