The Weekly Fill: Finish Healing (+6 Ways To Get Started)
6 minute read | Stop waiting. You can finish healing. Here's how to get started.
In many ways, we're always healing.
But how you heal, specifically how much is required in that healing, will change throughout your life.
You may go through periods where health is all-consuming. But for the majority of your life, it should not be something that exhausts you but the thing that allows you to live.
I don't think we spend enough time here.
We don't spend enough time pondering what life could look like if we didn't have to worry about our health. It just existed as the means to live life.
When I was in the thick of my healing journey, I came to the place out of sheer desperation when I decided I wanted to be well.
I didn't want to live strapped to my health problems or labeled by my diseases.
I wanted to live.
I wanted to go on long walks, use my energy to dig deeper into learning, laugh harder, seek adventures, uncover a new hobby, and embrace each season of life in whatever way it came.
I didn't know then how powerful that moment would be in freeing me from health. But it changed things.
I wanted to heal so I could live.
When I committed to healing, my health problems decreased, and my energy increased.
These graphs are perhaps a better example of what I mean.
The traditional model of health tends to keep us stuck forever living for health (obviously a great marketing strategy that leaves you needing the health space because your problems never really go away).
But healing by energizing the body leads to a place where you can put less work in and experience a greater reward. You spend less time worrying about health and more time invested in living it.
Of course, healing is a lifestyle. You'll always have to 'work' at it.
But you shouldn't find yourself in the trenches of deep healing for life. You should find yourself lifting out of it, living healed, or at the very least, knowing how to rebalance your life to the place of healing.
All because healing is what you do.
But to do that, you have to finish healing in the deeper trenches.
You have to nourish your mind, body, and soul so it has the resources and reserves to live healed.
That means you have to commit to health. You have to put the work in.
But imagine what could change if you worked at it and committed to it for the rest of the year.
Think how far you could be if you started investing in healing now.
You wouldn't have to set New Year resolutions pledging your commitment to health (the same ones you've spoken about and yet failed the last three years). Because you worked on finishing healing this year, you could reach for something bigger and better next year.
Can you imagine setting resolutions that didn't revolve around your health?
All because you did the thing right now!
You changed the story your body was telling! (Psst. That's in your power)
How do you change the story?
You change it by changing your environment.
Your body is fully capable of healing. It doesn't need you to do for it what it knows how to do. But it does require you to provide the environment to heal.
It needs you to support your body, not change it (change is your body's job).
You support your body by providing a safe and energized environment for it to thrive. That happens through healthy bioenergetics.
There are a million and one ways to do that. But don't complicate it. Think of the foundations required in healing and build from there.
Here are a few foundations that changed everything for me and ones I know will help you heal.
6 Foundations of Healing To Start Implementing Today!
01: Eat Breakfast
Breakfast is one of the most skipped meals, even though it's the most important.Â
One thing most people overlook in a world that promotes fasting is that fasting is only beneficial based on how you live in the fed state. The meal that breaks the fast is the meal that sets the stage for how valuable the fast is.
Breakfast is when your metabolism is at its highest, your digestive system is awake and ready to respond, and you absorb, synthesize, and utilize the nutrients better than nearly any other time of the day.
If you're not eating breakfast and a good one, you should!
Coffee doesn't count. Skip the sugar-heavy breakfast foods and drinks (which only make you crave more sugar) and opt for a protein-rich, hearty breakfast.
The day's first meal sets the stage hormonally, biogenetically, and mentally for the rest of your day.
02: Create Better Posture
How you stand is changing how safe your body feels.
Like your other senses, the posture of your body or what is known as body language is communicating signals to your nervous system, determining how you should respond.
It’s wild to think about, but how you stand changes your hormonal patterns, mindset response, and energy levels.
Focus on uncrossing your arms, lifting your chest, standing tall, and taking deep breaths. It may feel uncomfortable, but it will help you repattern your fascia over time.
03: Focus on Energized Movement
We all know movement is important, but not all movement is created equal. Some forms of movement work against your healing. It's the type of movement that stresses the body beyond its capacity of energy to heal. This most often comes in the form of high-intensity or prolonged cardio workouts.
Of course, there is a time and place for high-intensity workouts, but that is not when you are in the deep places of healing.
Focus on healing movement, which is movement that creates flow and energy. Generally, that means lower-intensity movement patterns built into your day from sunrise to sunset.
One easy way to incorporate more movement is to take a 2-5 minute movement break at the top of every hour. Take the long route to the bathroom, pick up an area of your home, or take a phone call outside while you walk. The goal is not how much movement. It’s just more movement.
04: Forgive Faster
I'm not going to lie and say this one comes easily. Forgiveness is hard. But forgiveness is one of the best forms of emotional release, letting go of things that require so much energy to hold onto and opening up that energy to heal.
To forgive, you must understand what forgiveness is and is not.
Forgiveness is not making the wrong right. It's not accepting what was done to you.
Forgiveness is letting go of the things that hurt you or hold you back so you don't have to carry them, freeing yourself to have the space to live more.
05: Speak Kindly + Powerfully
Your words have the power to change your biology and others’ biology. Words are literally shifting your hormones and even others.
Let that linger in your mind a little longer.
What you say to others and what you speak over yourself is changing your biology. Words are powerful!
And from the advice of my mother, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
06: Deepen connections
Independence is not the design of the body. It’s actually pulling you into a form of dysregulation. No matter how much the world promotes an independent life as the best life. It’s killing you.
We need people. People need us.
You were created dependent on God and interdependent on one another.
This year, spend less time consumed by your own life and start living together in a community. Let others in your life and become a part of their life.
Build relationships. Laugh more. Cuddle. Get intimate. Pray Continuously and Worship God, the giver of life.
Relationships are the lifeblood of our humanity. Even us introverts need to make it a priority.
