My Hormones Might Be Trash
How to know if your hormones are or aren't a problem. PLUS, what to do if you have a hormonal problem.
Earlier this summer, I found myself scrolling social media and came across post after post, sharing lists of what might justify a hormonal problem.
I scrolled past the first one and the second one, rolling my eyes at the scare tactics health professionals often use to get you to pay attention (and hopefully buy into their solution).
But the fourth post captured my attention. Maybe it was a sign from God? Or my fears that drew me in. Regardless, I quickly put my "symptoms" through the list and determined my hormones were definitely a problem.
The funny thing was that I wasn't feeling bad outside of recently plucking an additional chin hair. Nothing seemed wildly out of the ordinary.
But something about this post really stirred a new fear in me (and that pesky chin hair didn't help), leading me to question, "What if something was wrong?"
What if something was wrong?
I'm unsure if it was a moment of weakness or the realization that maybe my body wasn't responding as I thought it should, but I spiraled quickly and dangerously into the place I often encourage you to avoid.
I had officially made myself believe my hormones were trashed.
After a month of stewing over my fears while simultaneously trying to suppress them, I started to recognize more problems arising in my health—more than just chin hair.
I developed so much acne I seriously questioned if I was back in puberty.
My moods were wilder than any rollercoaster I'd been on.
My hair seemed dull (although that might be a figment of my imagination).
I stepped on the scale for the first time in forever and assumed our scale was out of calibration. But the ten-pound dumbbell I used to check proved otherwise. The pounds were stacking on.
Those were the big moments of questioning.
You can get the full details of everything else (and more about these problems) inside the latest podcast.
Naturally, my mind went wild.
Was I in early menopause? Or have I hit perimenopause? I can't be old enough for that.
Oh my gosh, my hormones ARE trashed.
After weeks of this back-and-forth internal argument between believing my hormones were trashed and trying to believe everything was fine, I finally took a deep breath. I decided to schedule an appointment with a hormone specialist.
Having an external source to help you look is always a wise idea (especially if your mind likes to jump to worst-case scenario thinking). Plus, I always think some comprehensive blood work is helpful in making necessary and healthy changes.
But that appointment is still months away.
In the meantime, I didn't want to wait.
Instead of fretting, it was time to do something.
Action is the only force of healing we can control.
It was time to take action, and ironically (and not surprisingly), in the last month of implementing the action, nearly every symptom I struggled with has lessened.
I'm getting well simply by executing healthy actions.
It's not mind-blowing by any means. If you do something healthy long enough, you'll eventually begin to feel healthy.
I still have my appointment scheduled because I think it's wise to examine how your body is responding, regardless of how you feel sometimes.
But if I had gone back through the same list of 'symptoms' that started this whirlwind, I would have reached a different conclusion.
Again, thanks to doing the little things daily that help support my body.
Hormones are rarely the problem.
If you understand hormones, outside of what common health has told you, you know hormones are rarely the 'problem.' Hormones are just messenger molecules. The problem isn't with the messenger - it's with the message.
If you are having hormonal problems, you need to ask what message your body is sending and why.
Most often, that message shifts based on your:
Stress level
Connection to others (and life)
Blood sugar balance
Five reasons why I had hormonal symptoms:
As I re-evaluated my current life, I could pinpoint five things that might be the reason for the mixed and imbalanced message that sent my hormones into a pattern I don't like.
Excess caffeine consumption
Excess stress
Reintroduction to gluten
Seasonal (and lifestyle) changes
Poor sleep patterns
The good news is that when you know what might be the culprit, you can do something to change it. Even when you don't know why, you can still do something to change.
It's a win-win.
The key is reminding yourself that your body is capable and willing to heal. YOUR BODY WANTS TO BE WELL. But that means you have to provide the tools, resources, and support for it to live well.

Tools that heal your hormones:
A few years ago, I put together a Hormone Reset Program that helped me regain balance in other points when my hormones got out of balance, and I remember how good it made me feel.
I recently dug it back up and thought you might want to join me. Whether your hormones really do feel trashed or you need a pick-me-up as the seasons change, this hormone reset is helpful for anyone.
ONLY FIVE DAYS of extra nourishment and support to provide space, safety, and energy for your body to heal.
What do you say? Do you want to join me?
I plan to start the five-day reset on September 22nd. That gives you (and me) time to work through the class and prepare for it. But you can really begin this journey whenever you need it.
