Metabolism: Three Truths + One *Lie*
I often relate metabolism to the saying:
"I know enough to be dangerous."
But knowing enough without knowing all might be why you've been attempting to speed up your metabolism but haven't seen results.
You have enough information to take action but not all of the details to take the RIGHT action.
While I'm not saying I know everything, nor does anyone, I worry that our obsession with health has caused us to zoom in so far that all we have is a little knowledge about many things but rarely the right knowledge to take action.
Maybe better said, we know too much about things we don't need to know and not enough about what we should know.
You can blame WebMD, which has arguably led more people to become masters of their own misery than gain the knowledge that will help them heal.
But in my own life, I found the knowledge curse in flip-bait articles on magazine covers.
I had no idea what metabolism was, but based on those articles, I knew it was my problem.
I had just enough information to become a danger to myself.
The tricky part is that much of what I did understand was true.
Three truths about metabolism:
You can speed up your metabolism.
It can change how you look and how much body fat you store.
Men generally have a higher metabolism than women.
But it's also so much more than that. Yet stopping here is where many of us get in trouble, leading to action that amplifies metabolic breakdown, not enhancing it.
I don't want this to be confusing but to prove how confusion has derailed most of us, not because of what you know but because of what you don't know.
It's also why I'm passionate about my podcast series, Health School. I want to teach you what you need to know about your health so you can let go of what isn't true and make changes based on what is.
To make changes that pay off.
While dispelling lies like the common metabolic lie.
One lie about metabolism:
Your metabolism is fighting against you and keeping you fat.
One, your body is never against you. It is always fighting for your protection.
Two, how much or how little body fat you have is a metric of your energy levels more than your metabolic output. But believing that comes from understanding your metabolism ONLY changes based on your energy flow.
Metabolism doesn't change your energy, but it manages the energy you have, shifting your biology and psychology to respond accordingly.
To alter your metabolism, you must influence your energy.
Health is always an energy issue. It's energy, not metabolism, that changes your structure, determining how much or little fat and muscle you have.
I don't want you to miss that detail.
Your metabolism is only concerned about energy, not how much you eat, what you eat, how you work out, or how much you sleep. These things can certainly change your metabolism, but only based on how they change and influence your energy.
Only energy can change your metabolism.
But we still need to talk about metabolism because your metabolism can help you understand how much or little energy you are working with and what you need to alter to shift your health.
