Health Habits I’m taking Into The New Year (And Some I'm Leaving)
Read if you're struggling to do what you want to do! You might be surprised to know, you're not the problem but this is....
“I bet you’re a resolution person.”
It makes sense why people think that. Working in the health space, I know that this season is prime time—the period between Christmas and New Year—when many evaluate their lives and bodies.
And honestly? I’m not opposed to that. Evaluation is one of the most critical aspects of change. Setting a vision and a plan for where you want to go is essential to change.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent time reflecting on what worked this year and what didn’t. In my latest podcast episode, I share five lessons I’m taking into the new year—and a few things I’m leaving behind.
Personally, the evaluation part has been one of the most influential aspects of change in my life, and I believe it can be in yours, too.
The Problem Isn’t You—It’s the System
Here’s why I believe evaluation is crucial: most of the time, the reason things don’t pan out the way we hope isn’t because of you. It’s because of the systems you’re trying to use.
Without evaluation, I think it’s easy to see yourself as the problem rather than the system you’re trying to use to change.
You’re not the reason you can’t change. It’s the system in which you’re attempting to change.
Take weight loss, for example.
There are countless ways to lose weight, but only a few focus on losing the right kind of weight. Crash diets might give you quick results, but often, that weight loss includes things you don’t want to lose—like healthy tissue mass or water weight.
And because these methods are unsustainable, the results don’t last.
Sustainable weight loss—the kind that focuses on fat loss and long-term health—takes time. It’s not flashy, but it’s the right process, and the right process makes all the difference.
The reason you can’t lose weight is not because your body is at fault—it’s because you’re following a faulty system. When you shift the system, you shift the outcome.
If you want to learn more about creating the right system for weight loss, join me for my next live class on January 15th. We’ll explore what works and why.
Change requires a change in the system or process you are using to change.
The first step to change the system is to change the focus.
Instead of focusing on the outcomes, focus on the daily action. Action is the ONLY place change occurs.
Change happens in the daily action.
Here’s what I want you to know as you set goals or intentions for the new year:
Change doesn’t happen because you set goals. It happens because of what you do today.
If you want to become a reader, don’t focus on the number of books you want to read. Focus on taking 20 minutes each day to read.
If you want to get out of debt, don’t stress about the total amount. Instead, take one daily action to build wealth.
If you want to get fit, let go of the scale and commit to moving your body daily.
The outcomes will take care of themselves when you focus on the actions.
My Focus for the Year:
There are a number of things I’d like to change this year (you can see the rest here). I’ve picked a few, like improving my posture (because your body posture changes your biology) and embracing slow living (getting rid of the need for convenience).
I know these changes won’t happen because I wrote them down. They’ll happen because I commit to daily and weekly actions like:
Signing up for classes (and following through).
Setting boundaries.
Using reminders to keep myself accountable.
Planning my days strategically.
Shifting my perspective.
It won’t be perfect, and it will be challenging—because all change, even good change, is challenging. But I’m committed to evaluating, staying flexible, and working on the system that supports my life.
The Power of Choice
As you enter the new year, remember that one of your greatest tools is the power of choice.
