A Decade of Healing: What I Would Change and What I Wouldn’t
If I Could Go Back: One Thing I’d Change About Healing (And One I Wouldn’t)
REMINDER: LIVE CLASS TOMORROW NIGHT.
Stop Outsourcing, Start Collaborating: A New Approach to Health
{Details below}
It's been a decade since I fell ill. Generally, I don't dwell on that season of life, at least not the hard places I thought I'd never escape. Similar to post-childbirth, you tend to forget the pain after living so long with the gift.
While I wouldn't wish health trials on anyone, in hindsight, I gained so much during these years that I wouldn't trade them.
But let's be honest, everyone says that on the other side. It's always in hindsight that we see more clearly what feels impossible in the messy middle. I know how shallow those words can sound when you're deep in it.
But I want you to remember, wherever your health lands you, it's rarely permanent.
Health is seasonal.
Your body has every capacity to change. I say it often because I want it to be a firm foundation in your health beliefs - your body wants to be well, and it has the ability.
It's not the norm to think this way. It will take some unlearning. If you can't embrace these beliefs, you'll find yourself fighting health when health was never intended to be a fight.
On the podcast this week, I break down ten of the most powerful lessons I learned in the decade of healing. Ninety-five percent of them are mindset shifts. The other five percent? They're the basics—sunlight, sleep, nourishment. The things that seem too simple to work and too good to be true.
After recording the episode, I let myself reflect on the journey a little more. It's been a while since I lingered there, and I asked myself: if I could go back and change anything, would I?
I found one very specific thing I would absolutely change if I could—and one thing I wouldn't.
The One Thing I Would Change: Outsourcing My Health
If I could go back and change one thing, it would be all the time, energy, and endless amounts of money I spent trying to find something or someone to "fix" me.
This might sound similar to the one thing I wouldn't change, but the difference is vital.
Outsourcing, by definition, means "to obtain (goods or a service) from an outside or foreign supplier, especially in place of an internal source."
In my case, I spent so much time chasing the next simple fix—a supplement, a system, a cure—that I started exchanging my internal awareness for external ideas. And more often than not, it made my symptoms worse. It drained my energy instead of filling it.
That's because health isn't something to fix. It's something to nourish, to honor, to lean into, to understand, and to support.
One Thing I Wouldn't Change: Community and Collaboration
Change, sickness, and a lack of health can be overwhelming. And often, that overwhelm leads to isolation. It's something we see promoted in health circles all the time: "If you're sick, isolate."
But isolation creates its own health problems. Countless studies show that a lack of community significantly increases rates of illness, disease, and even death.
People need people—especially when you're under-resourced and overburdened. Isolation isn't sustainable.
That doesn't mean you let just anyone in. But choosing the right people—those who can help hold you in your healing and support what you can't manage alone—is vital.
Instead of looking for practitioners to outsource my health, I shifted my mindset. I wanted a team to collaborate with, working alongside me to nourish my body well. This was a key element in my health journey, and I can confidently say it's one of the reasons I'm healthier now than ever.
The secret wasn't handing over my health to others. It was surrounding myself with a healing community and learning how to collaborate—not just with them but also with myself and my self-awareness.
I honestly believe our world would be very different if we understood both of these more clearly.
